感恩節美食大賽
第一屆長島文協美食大賽相當精彩熱鬧!明明說好兩點鐘開賣,卻有好多家長從一點半就迫不及待受不了眼前美食的誘惑,紛紛掏腰包大快朵頤!還不到兩點鐘就有菜式已經賣完了!感謝將近二十多位家長辛苦貢獻的世界各地美食與協助幫忙,也謝謝全校家長熱情的購買,特別感謝主辦家長Lisa與Michael Kong的細心籌備,讓我們募到約$560,全數作為學校活動經費,圓滿成功!恭喜前三名票數最高的廚師:Karen Fang(韓式辣炒年糕及巴斯克乳酪蛋糕), Yifang Shen(酥皮肉鬆麵包及迷你熱狗包),Lisa Liow(新鮮檸檬愛玉及火雞造型杯子蛋糕),熱烈恭喜!感謝理事長及會長捐贈的獎品,高級紅酒兩支與一品廚師帽一頂! 其他更多熱賣的餐點像台式麵線,刈包,雞蛋糕等等,請大家在我們的活動相簿中“視”吃!

Taste of Thanksgiving
Our first Taste of Thanksgiving event was a huge success! We had more than 20 parents who contributed delicious dishes from around the world, as well as the parents who rushed in way before 2:00pm and started buying, our first sold out dish was emptied before 2pm! Thanks to the coordinator, Lisa and Michael Kong, for organizing and putting this together. We were able to raise approximately $560 in total which contributes to the school funding!
Congratulations to the top 3 chefs who received most food tickets for their dishes: Karen Fang (Korean Spicy Sticky Rice Cakes and Basque Burnt Cheesecake), Yifang Shen (Pork Floss with Puff Pastry Buns and Mini Pigs in a Blanket), Lisa Liow (Fresh Lemon Aiyu Jelly Drinks and Turkey Cupcakes)! The prizes included two bottles of wines, a toque (chef’s white hat) and apron, contributed by Chairperson Jet and President Birdy.
- To observe Thanksgiving long weekend, school will be closed on 12/1/19. We hope everyone will have a peaceful and happy Thanksgiving.
- Please note that the nutrition seminar has been rescheduled to 12/8/19. CCALI invited Nutritionist Jay Hwang, who is the current Director of Food and Nutrition Services at NYC H+H/Elmhurst Hospital Center, to speak for us, this is a great opportunity to bring questions. Thanks to the parents who helped filling out the topic survey, don’t miss it!

Please support CCALI by making a purchase! The t-shirts will be useful when students attend school and community activities, or they like it so much they will wear it to school every week! Huge thanks to our professional parent volunteer Garda for helping on the designs!
- How time flies! Holiday season is just around the corner, and some stores have already started holiday sales. CCALI is a non-profit organization that can use some help from our members.
“Champions for Charity” by Americana Manhasset Shopping Center and Wheatley Plaza stores will take place from Thursday 12/5 through Saturday 12/7 (see event flyer). Please note that the event only last 3 days this year! Shoppers will need to pre-register to receive the Champion number that the stores need to associate the purchases with the charity organization. Taste of Thanksgiving
Huge thanks to parent volunteer, Lisa, for hosting and coordinating on the “Taste of Thanksgiving” school event! We are looking forward to a delicious and fun day on the upcoming school day. Parents can still sign up if they haven’t done so. You can participate as a chef OR a food critic! The event will take place in room 308/310 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm on 11/24. You may come earlier to purchase the food tickets at $1 each. The entire proceeds will benefit CCALI toward its funding on school events for our children.

新春籌款晚會
各位家長這週應該都從孩子們的回家作業夾裡收到了文協今年新春籌款晚會的傳單。以下為細節說明:
新春晚會入場券包括晚宴餐點,$85 大人票是中國式宴席十道菜,採傳統高級宴席菜色。$35 兒童票採自助餐形式,菜式非常豐富,大部分都是孩子們愛吃的西式餐點。今年兒童票上限由13歲提高到15歲,鼓勵所有學生都可以購買兒童票入場。四歲以下不佔席位的兒童免費入場,可跟大人入席,如果需要兒童高腳椅的幼童,請在購票時提及,每桌安排不超過兩張兒童高腳椅,以免座位過為擁擠。大人席與兒童自助餐席會分成兩邊,如有需要,早點買票可以選跟兒童自助餐席靠近的地方。如果想讓您的孩子也享用大人宴席,請幫您的孩子購買大人票。
長島文協每年的新春晚會是我們最大的籌款活動。我們希望家長和各個公司行號能幫忙贊助我們的組織,贊助方法有以下幾項:
- 贊助新春晚會活動,認購晚會入場券
- 認購年刊廣告
- 公司行號或私人直接捐贈(現金或抽獎禮籃)
晚會中由熱鬧萬分的舞龍舞獅打鼓為開場, 財神爺報到發紅包給小孩子們。也有小朋友們看得如癡如醉的扯鈴,中國功夫,還有布袋戲,當然少不了各年級學生們熱情準備的精彩表演,現場也有摸彩抽多樣精美的大奬。希望家長們帶著您的小孩子 一起來共襄盛舉。 這即將會是小孩子參加過最熱鬧最愉快的中國新年晚會。

Annual Chinese New Year Celebration Fundraiser
Please note that all students should have received a package in their folders in regards to our annual Chinese New Year Celebration Fundraiser this weekend. The additional details are as follows:
The admission includes the dinner at the event. The $85 Adult tickets are for traditional 10-course Chinese banquet style, with high-standard selection of formal dinner course selections. The $35 children tickets are for buffet style, with a large varieties that are in their favor, we have raised the age limit from 13 to 15 so all our students can attend by buying $35 tickets. Children under 4 that are not occupying seats are free, for infants and toddlers that would like a highchair, please let us know when you purchase the tickets, we would like to keep a maximum number of 2 highchairs per table to avoid congested seating. The banquet and buffet will be set up in the same ballroom, if you wish to be closer to your children at the buffet side, we suggest you to purchase your tickets early!
CCALI is a non-profit organization, we rely on fundraisers to help our organization to run and grow. The Annual Chinese New Year Celebration Fundraiser is our biggest fundraiser event for the entire school year. There are few ways you and all business/communities can contribute:
- Purchase tickets to the Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner
- Purchase an ad to be placed on our yearbook
- Direct contribution in monetary form or raffle baskets
The celebration leads off by a Lion Troupe with a Dragon, a Lion, tom drums, cymbals, and gong, you will feel like you are in a parade in Chinatown! God of Wealth will also be there to give out red bags to children and to wish everyone a prosperous year of Pig. The programs include performances from our famous Chinese yo-yo (Diabolos) teams, our martial arts class, our Taiwanese puppet show team, along with all the performances prepared by our teachers and students from all grades. There will also be a raffle drawing with attractive prizes for everyone! This will be an exceptional experience for your children’s Chinese New Year.

本週理事會以及一些熱心的家長舉辦了萬聖節服裝秀,多位義工家長穿上代表不同時代的傳統服裝介紹給同學們,也準備了有獎徵答讓學生可以答題得coupon。學生們對於平常只能在戲劇中看到的服裝可以親眼看到親手摸到,覺得很新奇!義工家長們也因為有了這難得的機會穿上這些服裝玩得很開心,大家都度過了一個很不一樣的中國變裝的萬聖節!我們也特別感謝福利社每年都在萬聖節前夕大放送!每個小朋友拿糖果拿到笑呵呵!
- 十一月三日,日光節約時間結束,大家得回一小時睡眠時間!

The Halloween Festivity for this week was a great success! There were 12 parent volunteers dressed in traditional clothing from different Chinese dynasties, regions, and roles. The children had a chance to admire and learn about the great textile culture passed down from thousands of years ago. The parent volunteers also had a great time putting on something they never thought they could! It is a wonderful experience for all. We also would like to thank the concession stand for giving out treats every Halloween, just to see the children smile! Happy Halloween!

本週舉辦了第二次的教師培訓講座,由副校長謝邦芳老師主講。這次的講座內容除了分享教案編寫,也分享了中華文化裡面很有趣的文字學。長島文協堅持正體中文教學,是希望保有中華文字最原始的部分,把中國字由古至今的演變加入教學裡面是讓孩子產生興趣的法寶。
- 十月二十七日是預定第一次期中考,請與各班老師們確認日期與時間。
- 十月二十七日,理事會以及一些熱心的家長將舉辦萬聖節服裝秀,義工家長將穿著中國服裝發糖果,傳統注音班九年級的學生擔任義工並有有獎徵答發coupon。鼓勵學生家長老師打扮參加,但要提醒不要戴面具、不能有武器或尖銳的配件,不能有恐怖的扮相。地點在教室大樓外的中庭,如下雨則改在308教室。各班參加時間如下:
- 2:30~2:45pm: K1, K2, PK2, P2, P3
- 2:45~3:00pm: T2, T4, T6, T7, T8, P4, P5
- 3:00~3:15pm: T1, T3, T5, P1, P6, P7

The second Teacher Training Seminar was held this week, hosted by Assistant Principal, Ms. Anne Hsieh. Other than sharing on the planning and writing of lesson plans for classes, Ms. Hsieh also gave lessons on “Analysis of Chinese Characters”. CCALI insists on using Traditional Chinese teaching system in its curriculum, because all the beauty and origins are retained in Traditional system. The analysis teaches on the fun facts of how each character evolved from thousands of years ago. Sharing of these cultural fun facts is the key to make Chinese learning more interesting for the children.
- 10/27 is the scheduled date of first midterm exam. Please reach out to your teachers to find out the details for your class.
- On 10/27, the parent volunteers are preparing a Halloween activity for the whole school. School has many Chinese traditional clothing from different eras in history. We will have parent volunteers wearing Chinese ancient costumes and pass out treats to all classes, students from class T9 will also be volunteering. We encourage students, parents, and teachers to dress up and participate if you want! Reminder the following will not be allowed: masks, weapons, sharp and dangerous accessories. We also kindly ask to not wear scary-looking costumes since we have young children. The location will be the courtyard outside the buildings, rain location will be room 308 in Anna Rubin Hall. Please refer to the time slots below for each class:

- How time flies! Holiday season is just around the corner, and some stores have already started holiday sales. CCALI is a non-profit organization that can use some help from our members.“Champions for Charity” by Americana Manhasset Shopping Center and Wheatley Plaza stores will take place from Thursday 12/5 through Saturday 12/7 (see event flyer). In order for Mr. Hwang to deliver the right content within the limited time, he would like parents to share what you are interested in hearing about. We have created this survey for parents to fill out, don’t miss this great opportunity!

Teacher Appreciation Day
The Photo Day was a success! We were blessed with the gorgeous weather. We thank the school staff and all the parent volunteers that helped to make this process smooth and successful! Pictures are posted on our Facebook page.
- Attention to students in the Wutang Martial Arts cultural class and the Advanced Diabolo students. Starting 10/20/19, Wutang Martial Arts will be moved to room 308, and Advanced Diabolo will be moved to room 302. Please make a note of these changes.

重陽敬老節活動
學校準備了九九重陽敬老節的相關活動。學校準備了應景的菊花,茱萸,重陽糕,還有幼菊泡的茶,介紹了重陽節始於漢朝的歷史故事,農曆九月九日為重陽節,因九與久同音,故此節日也訂 為敬老節,象徵長長久久。同學們也學會了怎麼給長輩奉茶。此次活動開放給一到四年級的同學參加,針對他們的中文程度設計內容,讓活動參與更踴躍。
- 十月十三日,全校團體照日。全校每年都會幫每班照班級團體照,還有一張全校大合照,我們希望每位同學都能出席。照片將會出現在年刊,學校臉書頁,還有網頁。有填Photo Opt-out的學生將不會參與照相活動。
- 成人舞蹈班將於十月十三日開始上課,上課時間為文化課日的 3:00pm至 4:00pm。請報名的家長準時出席。因為這是新的成人課,所以學校特別開放第一週給家長試課旁聽,希望有興趣的家長多多利用,上課服裝著緊身褲和寬鬆上衣即可。其餘的成人課程,瑜伽上課時間為文化課日的 2:00pm至 3:00pm,成人中文課為文化課日的 4:00pm至5:00pm。文化課上課的日期,請參閱學校行事曆。

Teacher Appreciation Day
Double Ninth (Chong Yang) Festival (Grandparents Day)
School prepared event for introducing to our students on the history of the Double Ninth Festival, which is also known as the Grandparents Day. Students were told on the history for how this festival came in place. The festival is celebrated on September 9th on Lunar calendar with chrysanthemums wine (we used tea to substitute) and Chong Yang cake, which were shown to the students. Students also learned how to properly serve tea to elderly using Chinese. This is also a day we celebrate longevity, because the number 9 has the same sound as long, therefore it is also a day for embracing the importance of respecting the elderly. This event was designed for 1st to 4th graders, we had great feedback and participation from the students.
- Photo Day on 10/13/19, Photo Day. Every year we will gather the entire school to take photos of every class, and a group photo for the entire school including staff, teachers, and students. Please fill out the photo opt-out form if you do not wish your child to appear in the photos.
- Adult Chinese Folk Dance Class will start on 10/13/19. Dance classes are in session during cultural class days from 3:00pm to 4:00pm. Since this is a new adult class, school opens it up to all interested parents to do a trial class during this first week, don’t miss this great opportunity!. The time for other adult classes are: Yoga from 2:00pm to 3:00pm, Chinese language from 4:00pm to 5:00pm, all on the days when cultural classes are in session. Please refer to school calendar for the days cultural classes are in session.
- The school will have a committee meeting on the annual Chinese New Year Fundraiser Dinner in Harry Schure Hall lecture hall at 1:50pm on 10/13. We welcome all parents to join the discussion. We are in need of parent volunteers to join this committee!

教師節活動
傳統注音班八年級余欣燕老師帶領班上學生主辦了教師節的活動。活動的流程刻意安排成高年級主導的拉近距離與跨班互動方式:
1. 先由T8兩位學生做開場
2. 接著讓參與學生看有關孔子的動畫影片,並從中出問題。
3. 之後由T8學生輪流就動畫內容提問,再由參與學生搶答,答對的獲得獎勵卷。
這次充份發揮長島文協「寓教於樂」的教學宗旨,讓問答變成趣味性的互動!「丘」和「秋」同音,夏之後是「秋」,所以孔子名「丘」是和「夏」之後的季節發音相同的字,於是就有同學答對了,因為那位同學回答「ㄑㄧㄡˉ」!至於孔子字「仲尼」也是以相似的方式提示同學「很重的泥土」唸作「重泥」!
4. 校長最後提出兩個趣味問題,答對的也有獎勵卷。
1)今天主持活動的是哪一班?
剛問完,馬上有同學說是八年級!
2)如果孔子還活著,請問他有幾歲了?
有同學回答說是兩千多歲了!厲害喔!
校長表示,這次安排由中高年級參與活動是很恰當的構想,大家也都比較能投入,謝謝協會支持!

家長大會
感謝家長們的出席,家長會在全年,為小朋友及家長們規畫出一系列與傳統文化及習俗有關的活動,會在不同的節慶時在學校舉辦。非常感謝家長們熱心參與,方讓我們的孩童們可以歡樂中學習中華文化。茲附上年度計畫,供家長們參閱,家長會非常歡迎家長們的參與與協助,如對任何活動有興趣,請隨時與家長會聯絡。
- 成人舞蹈課招生。學校新增了民族舞蹈成人班,由文化課專業舞蹈老師徐天嘯指導。時間訂為上課日的下午3:15~4:00pm。課程內容第一段是水袖舞,預計最遲下週(10/13)開課。其他成人文化課包括瑜伽及個人或團體中文課,歡迎家長至教務處查詢細節與報名。
- 十月六日重陽節活動。今年重陽節是國曆十月七日,學校與老師們準備了有關重陽節敬老節的相關活動。活動內容希望帶給孩子們中華文化裡面尊敬長者的重要觀念。這週針對中小班的同學設計活動內容,有兩梯次,特別歡迎祖父母與家長來308教室一起參與。

Teacher Appreciation Day
Traditional Zhuyin 8th Grade class teacher, Ms. Shin-ian Yu, along with her students, took the lead and hosted the cultural activity to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Day (Confucius’ Birthday) which falls on 9/28 of every year. The main focus is to tell the life story of Confucius, who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history. This activity was targeted for students in 6th grade and above, the focus was much better with the targeted group, students were able to answer the questions related to the presentation.

Parents Association Meeting
The Board thanks all the parents that attended the first Parents Association meeting, there were more than 20 parents who joined! The President, Birdy Chen, presented a series of Chinese cultural activities he proposed to host in school for the children, he hopes to supplement the language learning with some fun facts which enriches and broaden Chinese learning at CCALI. We really appreciate all the parents that volunteered to help coordinate and taking leads on these events, parents involvement is our biggest goal for this year. We welcome all parents continue to support the association by participating events, share your feedback and suggestions, at any time. We ask parents to review the list of events, and reach out to Birdy Chen if you have interest and are willing to spend a few hours to help out.
- Exciting news to our parents! Our Chinese Folk Dance cultural class teacher, Ms. Mary Xu, offered to open an adult dance class teaching authentic Chinese dance. The first series of class will be the famous Water Sleeves Dance. Classes will be held from 3:15pm to 4:00pm on days cultural classes are in session. Please contact administration in room 310 for more details. The first class will start no later than 10/13.
The next cultural activity will be observing the Double Ninth Day (Grandparents’ Day) on 10/6/19. The actual holiday falls on 10/7 this year, which is 9/9 on the lunar calendar. We will be sharing about the fun facts about this festivity, we welcome all grandparents to join us, we are hoping to teach our students on important Chinese traditions of “generations” and “respect to elderly”. We will have two sessions for participating classes.- 2:30~2:45pm – Room 308

第一次理事會
今年的第一次理事會採開放式,理事長Jet 表示,非常開心有不少熱心家長參加。前理事長也是現任理事會的secretary 戎醫生也特別前來給予我們寶貴的經驗及指導。
會長Birdy 詳細介紹今年學校將要舉辦的活動,包括文協四十周年慶及新年春節晚會。今年理事會和學校的一個共同目標就是學生家長的參與。衷心希望家長們可以一起參與和協助辦理,大家一起共襄盛舉。
教師培訓座談會
由副校長謝邦芳老師主講的教師培訓座談會很成功!總共有六位家長參與。在近三小時內的分享,大家都頗有收獲。其中一位家長談到此次座談會:「很感謝長島文協舉辦教師培訓,讓家長有機會聽到講師分享在美華語教學經驗,以及學習帶小朋友玩增進華語的有趣小遊戲。在培訓中,也能和其他家長交流孩子們學習華語的心路歷程。非常推薦給各位家長。」
另一位準老師也提到:「一個都不能少,課室管理,或是課堂帶領,這是最主要的目標。謝副校長慷慨地分享她實務經驗,引導我們換位思考,同理孩子,漸進得到孩子的認同,這樣才能帶領孩子快樂學習。其實這樣的課程不只在課室管理,在父母面對孩子,都很有用。」
希望下期的教師培訓座談會有更多的家長來參與!

First Board Meeting
This year’s first Board meeting was open to all. Jet Wang, the Chairperson of this year welcomed all the parents who joined. Former Chairperson who is also the current secretary for our Board, Dr. Josephine Jung also attended the meeting and shared valuable experiences and guidance.
Birdy, the President, presented a series of cultural activities he had planned for the school year, including 40th anniversary celebration and the Chinese New Year Fundraiser dinner. The common goal for the school and the Board of this year is to gain parents involvement. We sincerely hope all the parents will participate and join committees for preparation of all events, have fun and share the special moments!
Teacher Training Seminar
The Teacher Training Seminar hosted by Assistant Principal, Anne Hsieh, was a success! There were six parents joined this session. The interactions and experience sharing was especially valuable. One of the parents shared her feedback: “I appreciate this opportunity to have participated in this training session, and given the chance to hear from experienced teachers who teach Chinese language in America for many years. I also learned some interactive games which I can do to make learning more fun for the kids. - Cultural classes start on 9/29, 4:00pm, see attached file for classroom list, it will also be posted outside school building on the day. For the first few weeks, we would like to ask parents of the younger classes to help and make sure your children get to the right classrooms for their cultural classes at 4:00pm. The children will be dismissed from their cultural classes at 5:00pm. Thank you for your help and support!
Please remember to bring Chinese yo-yo for the yo-yo class (sold at concession stand), yoga mat for yoga class, and brush and ink for Chinese calligraphy class, ballet flats and leggings for the dance class. “There has been a change in fee. Due to limited belts, our school will not provide belts for CCALI program unless students choose to test for it at NY WuTang. Thank you for the update.” - The first Parents Association General Meeting will be held on 9/29, starts at 1:45pm, in Harry Schure Hall Lecture Hall. The Board of Directors will be sharing the list of cultural events they are planning for our students, parents are encouraged to come, participate in the discussions and share your ideas.
Traditional Zhuyin 8th Grade class teacher, Ms. Yu, has prepared some activities to celebrate Confucious’ Birthday, which is on 9/28. Due to the level of content, this is limited to higher grade classes for better results and participation. The event will be held in room 308, between 3:30pm to 4:00pm. - There will be a free nutritious information seminar on 11/3/19. CCALI invited Nutritionist Jay Hwang, who is the current Director of Food and Nutrition Services at NYC H+H/Elmhurst Hospital Center, to speak for us. In order for Mr. Hwang to deliver the right content within the limited time, he would like parents to share what you are interested in hearing about. We have created this survey for parents to fill out, don’t miss this great opportunity!

今年九月十三適逢農曆八月十五中秋節,在開學第二週,文協布袋戲團準備了布袋戲節目來迎接文化節慶列車駛進第一站,希望讓學生們可以輕鬆快樂的展開一整年中文學習旅程。布袋戲內容介紹了傳統中秋節故事:后羿射日與嫦娥奔月。感謝義工家長們的辛苦策劃準備,還有進行現場攝影。

Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 13 this year. CCALI Puppet Show Team prepared a show to tell the legendary story of when there were ten suns in the sky thousands of years ago, and Hou-Yi was the hero that shot down nine of them to relieve the people from burning hot weather, and why his wife Chang-Er flew to the moon. The school hopes to bring some cultural fun to begin this year’s Chinese school. Huge thanks to all the parent volunteers for preparation, the show, and photography.
- The first CCALI Board of Directions meeting will be held in the upcoming weekend, 9/22/19. The Board welcomes all parents that are interested to join, and get to know what is planned for this school year. Parent volunteers are needed!

Immersing and Picture Storybook Club are two new classes prepared by our teachers wishing to bring practical use of Chinese culture and language into students’ everyday lives, this will help them to engage in the Chinese learning in a fun way.
- Adult Classes: This year the classes for adults include: Yoga, one-on-one Chinese lessons, and group Chinese lesson. Parents are welcome to enroll.
- Emergency Contact Form: This form not only include the emergency contact information, it also asks for allergy conditions for your children. Please be sure to submit it as early as possible to your language teacher or to the administrative desk.
